- Rawal later played negative roles in many successful films such as Ram Lakhan in 1989 which also starred Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor; Jigar in 1992, which had Ajay Devgn as one of the leads; and Damini in 1993
- In 1994, he won two National Awards in the best supporting actor category for his role in Woh Ladki and Sir. He also won his first Filmfare, which was in the best performance in a negative role category, for his work in the movie Sir
- He played a double role in the 1994 comedy Andaz Apna Apna, which was widely appreciated. The movie had Aamir Khan and Salman Khan in leading roles and though the movie didn’t do very well at the box-office, over time, it became a cult classic
- Rawal next appeared in box-office hits like Mohra, alongside Akshay Kumar, in 1994; Raja in 1995 and Chachi 420, which also had Kamal Hasan, in 1997
- In 2001, he won the Filmfare in the best comic actor category for his acting in the laugh riot Hera Pheri
- He played a blind bank robber in the 2002 crime thriller Aankhen, which also had Amitabh Bachchan playing one of the pivotal roles
- Rawal again won the Filmfare in the best comic actor category for his role in the 2002 movie Awara Paagal Deewana
