'Sharmaji Namkeen' trailer out: Ranbir Kapoor thanks Paresh Rawal for completing dad Rishi Kapoor's last film

The 'Sharmaji Namkeen' trailer is finally here.

The trailer shows the 58-year old protagonist, BG Sharma, essayed by Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal, trying to get a grip of his life post-retirement and eventually discovers his passion for culinary art.



Kapoor had shot major portions of the film when he was battling cancer before his unfortunate demise on April 30, 2020. After his demise, veteran actor Paresh Rawal stepped in to complete Kapoor's last film. The trailer shows both the actors playing the same character.

The movie will be released on Amazon Prime Video on March 31.

"One legend embracing us with warmth, another taking us through - Sharmaji’s story-of life, love,and laughter is surely the one to take away your blues," the official social media handle of the streaming platform read.

A day before the trailer launch, veteran actress Neetu Kapoor had shared her son's special video message on Instagram.

In her caption, the 'Jug Jugg Jeeyo' star said that this movie will always be close to her heart. "I witnessed the excitement when he started the movie and how keen he was to complete it after the treatment," she wrote.

In the one-and-a-half-minute-long emotional video, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor revealed that this movie was very special to him, not because it's his father's last film, but also because the late actor believed in the story.

The 'Sanju' star said that Kapoor Sr, a man so full of life and positivity, wanted to complete the film at all costs despite his health deteriorating. "But life had other plans. You may have heard the phrase ‘the show must go on’, but I saw my father live this life," he wrote.

The 39-year-old said that there was a time they felt the movie would never reach its completion after Kapoor's demise. The makers of the film tried to think about various ideas to work around the storyline. They even thought of using VFX or making Ranbir wear prosthetics to complete the film, but nothing worked out.

"It was a tough time for all of us. That's when Paresh Rawal stepped in and helped us finish the film," he said.

Extremely grateful to Rawal for this gesture, he said that it is rare to see two actors play one character in a movie. "'Sharmaji Namkeen' will always be one of my most-fondest memories of my father. Up on screen, bringing a smile to his countless fans."

Humbled by the words of appreciation, Rawal said that this was his special tribute to the late actor.


The film is directed by Hitesh Bhatia and produced by Excel Entertainment in association with MacGuffin Pictures. It also stars Juhi Chawla, Suhail Nayyar, Taaruk Raina, Satish Kaushik, Sheeba Chaddha, and Isha Talwar.
