- After completing her education at Yale, she joined the Boston Consulting Group in 1980 as a corporate strategist. Then followed stints at Motorola (1986-90) and Asea Brown Boveri (1990-94), and shattering gender stereotypes as she worked her way up to assume senior leadership rolesThe year 1994 marked the beginning of her Pepsi journey, an association which lasted for more than 24 years
- She joined PepsiCo as the senior vice-president of strategic planning and later moved to corporate strategy
- Nooyi was very strategic in her business approach and oversaw the company’s restructuring in 1997 that included PepsiCo spin off its restaurant chains comprising KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, and leading to the formation of Tricon Global Restaurants which eventually came to be known as Yum! Brands
- In 1998, she played a key role in Pepsi’s $3.3-billion acquisition of Tropicana which helped the company mark its place in the non-fizzy drinks market
- She was also responsible for the company’s merger with Quaker Oats Co. a few years later, bringing the widely popular energy drink Gatorade under Pepsi’s umbrella
- She became the Chief Financial Officer of the organisation in 2000 and was named its President the subsequent year
- Nooyi spotted early on that consumer trends were changing and helped PepsiCo diversify its product line to include healthier food options
- In October 2006, Nooyi was 42 years old when she became the fifth Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pepsi and the first woman to be at the helm of the global soft-drink and snacks giant
- The government of India honoured her with the Padma Bhushan -- the third-highest civilian award of the country -- in 2007
- She has also been named as one of the most powerful business executives and corporate leaders by many renowned magazines and business publications
- During her tenure, she anchored Pepsi’s revenue growth from $35 billion in 2006 to $63.5 billion in 2017
- She stepped down as the CEO of Pepsi in October 2018 after leading the Fortune 500 conglomerate for more than a decade but continued to chair the board of directors until early 2019
