- Though associated with cricket since an early age, Mahendra Singh Dhoni used to work for the Indian Railways as a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) in Kharagpur, West Bengal, before making it to the national side
- Dhoni made his ODI (one day international) debut in 2004 during India’s tour to Bangladesh. He failed to score any runs in the first match and the result in the next few matches was not so great either
- However, it was his 5th ODI that brought him into the limelight. Dhoni played a memorable knock, scoring 148 against Pakistan in Visakhapatnam
- He got his highest ODI score in 2005 when he hit Sri Lankan bowlers for an unbeaten 183 in 145 balls to win the match for India
- Dhoni also made his Test debut in 2005, against Sri Lanka
- After Rahul Dravid stepped down, Dhoni was appointed as the captain of India’s one-day side in 2007
- Backed by a young team, Dhoni’s first major success as a skipper came in 2007 when he brought home the World T20 championship in its inaugural season
- Dhoni was the highest bidded player in the first season of IPL (Indian Premier League) held in 2008 and was chosen to lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team. Barring a couple of years when CSK was banned from the tournament, Dhoni has led the CSK side in every season
- He won the ICC ODI Player of the Year award consecutively in 2008 and 2009
- Under his captainship, India became the number one Test team in the world for the first time, in 2009
- His next big success came in 2011 when he led the Indian side to win the World Cup after 28 years. Dhoni scored an unbeaten 91 against Sri Lanka and the final runs of his innings came in the form of a six, hit into the stands of the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which eventually became an iconic moment in the history of Indian cricket
- In 2013, he led the Indian side that won the ICC Champions Trophy
- Dhoni was the team captain in the subsequent World Cup, held in 2015, as well
- He gave up his Test captaincy and also retired from the longest format of the game in December 2014
- Dhoni stepped down as the captain of the Indian ODI and T20 International sides in 2017
- He announced his retirement from international cricket through social media platforms on August 15, 2020
