- Ajay Devgn first appeared on the silver screen playing a teen Mithun Chakraborty in the 1985 film Kalicharan
- He made his debut as a lead actor in Hindi films in the 1991 movie Phool Aur Kaante. He won the Filmfare award for best debut (male)
- Over the next few years, he starred in several movies, among which were box-office hits such as Jigar in 1992, Dilwale in 1993 and Suhaag, alongside Akshay Kumar, the same year
- Devgn got a Filmfare nomination in the best actor category for the first time for his performance in the 1995 movie Naajayaz
- He first played the role of a villain in the 1996 film Diljale
- By that time, Devgn had established himself in the romance and action genres. His first major success in the comedy genre came with the 1997 movie Ishq, in which he played the male lead with Aamir Khan. This was also his first hit movie in which he was paired opposite his future wife -- Kajol
