Savitri Jindal's Journey so far ...
- Savitri Devi Jindal grew up in Tinsukia town of upper Assam. She is Chairman Emeritus of the O P Jindal Group, a steel, power and mining conglomerate founded by her late husband Om Prakash Jindal
- In 2005, her husband passed away in a helicopter crash and she took over as the head of the conglomerate. O P Jindal founded the Jindal Group in 1952 and initially started manufacturing buckets, he then went on to manufacture pipes
- However, the day-to-day operations of various group companies are independently run by her four sons Prithviraj, Sajjan, Ratan and Naveen who have expanded their respective businesses in a big way
- Some of the flagship companies of the group are Jindal Saw Limited, JSW Steel, Jindal Stainless Steel Limited and Jindal Steel and Power Limited
- Fondly called Mata Ji, the group's turnover increased four times after she took over as the chairperson and the conglomerate established leadership positions in different businesses. Many group companies expanded overseas by acquiring mines in Chile and Mozambique
- She entered politics after her husband's demise and contested the Hisar assembly seat of Haryana on a Congress ticket from where she won twice, in 2005 and 2009. She, however, lost in the 2014 assembly elections to a BJP candidate
- She became a minister in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government twice. During her tenure, she held the portfolios of minister of state for revenue, disaster management, rehabilitation and housing in 2006 and minister for urban local bodies in 2013
- The matriarch of the Jindal Group is one of the richest women of the country; in 2010, Forbes magazine listed her as the fourth richest mother in the world
