UN Human Rights Commissioner praises India’s response to student protests, criticises Pak & China
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has praised India’s response to recent student-led protests in New Delhi, saying dialogue with youth leaders is a better approach than excessive force. Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk cited India while discussing peaceful protest, civic participation and shrinking civic space. His remarks come amid criticism from Opposition parties alleging excessive force and police action during the protests. Türk also raised concerns over protest crackdowns and human rights conditions in Pakistan, China and several other countries.
