Weight loss is often treated like a race. From detox drinks to crash diets and intense workout challenges, many people are constantly searching for the fastest way to drop kilos. The excitement of quick results can be tempting, especially when the weighing scale finally moves. But just as quickly as the weight drops, fatigue, mood swings and health issues tend to creep in. That’s when many realise the problem isn’t motivation, it’s the method. According to celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, the real answer lies not in shortcuts but in simple, everyday habits.

Nutritionist shares the right ways to lose weight

Rujuta Diwekar, who has worked closely with Kareena Kapoor and several other Bollywood celebrities, earlier in September shared her thoughts on sustainable weight loss and body toning. In her interaction on social media, she explained that most people don’t actually want to lose weight just to look a certain way.

The desire usually comes from deeper health concerns, such as low energy levels, poor sleep, lifestyle diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure, and overall discomfort in daily life. Weight loss, she said, is often seen as a solution to these problems, but rushing the process can backfire.

The nutritionist cautioned against extreme dieting, especially during the first few weeks of a new routine. She pointed out that rapid weight loss may look impressive initially, but it often comes with side effects. Hair fall, dull skin, irritability and disturbed sleep are common signs that the body is under stress. She emphasised that anything that promises dramatic results in a short span of time is unlikely to support long-term health.

So what does work?

According to Diwekar, the foundation of healthy weight loss rests on four simple pillars. The first and most important is eating mostly home-cooked food. She believes homemade meals help the body stay nourished, balanced and connected to natural hunger cues—something packaged or heavily processed foods fail to do. The second habit is regular physical activity, not extreme workouts, but movement that can be followed consistently.

The third key factor is proper sleep. Diwekar stressed that without adequate rest, the body struggles to recover, regulate hormones and function efficiently, making weight loss even harder. The fourth element, she added, is patience, allowing the body enough time to heal and adapt instead of forcing quick changes.

When these habits are followed regularly, Rujuta explained that results appear in stages. In the first three months, the biggest improvement is better health, more energy, improved sleep and better digestion. Over the next few months, body size starts to reduce gradually. Actual weight loss, she said, usually becomes noticeable only after five to six months. According to her, this order is important: health improves first, size changes next, and weight follows.

Rujuta Diwekar also reminded people that good health doesn’t look the same for everyone. Body shape, size and weight can vary with age, lifestyle and genetics. Chasing a specific number on the scale, she warned, often leads to frustration and unhealthy choices. Instead, she encourages focusing on habits that can be sustained for life. Stay tuned!
