Did Ilhan Omar have a fake name? What we know about the controversy
The controversy intensified after federal agents searched Omar's Washington, D.C., home and prosecutors referred to her by a different name in a court filing. However, the name dispute and the allegations surrounding her marriage remain contested, and the claims described in the reports have not established that she committed fraud.
Did Ilhan Omar Use a Fake Name
Trump called on Omar to “IMMEDIATELY resign” in a Truth Social post on Thursday evening. He claimed that her “real name” was Ilhan Nur Said Elmi and argued that she should no longer be allowed to serve in Congress. The president wrote that Omar had “openly admitted to FRAUD,” although his post did not establish evidence that she had committed fraud.
However, a separate report by Fox News said a spokesperson for Omar confirmed that her birth name was Ilhan Abdullahi Omar. Fox News Digital also reported that people familiar with the investigation identified her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.
The differing accounts have fueled questions about her name, but the use of a different name alone does not establish that someone committed a crime.
Why Has Trump Revived the Marriage Allegations
For years, far-right commentators and some Republican figures have alleged that Omar married her brother as part of an immigration scheme. Omar has repeatedly denied the accusation. The allegation first gained attention during her 2016 campaign for the Minnesota state legislature. It appeared in a since-deleted post on the conservative blog Power Line, which cited an anonymous source claiming that Omar's former husband was related to her by blood.
Trump returned to the claim on Thursday, pointing to Omar's response during an interview with MS NOW's Chris Hayes. When asked whether she had married her brother, Omar replied, “Not to my knowledge.”
Trump questioned the answer in his social media post, presenting it as evidence against her. Omar, however, described the allegation as “insane” during the interview.
What Is the Federal Investigation About?
The Trump administration is investigating Omar over alleged immigration fraud, which she has repeatedly denied.Last week, federal agents searched her Washington home. Omar said officers went through the property and seized 17 items. She described the search as “an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro also raised questions about Omar's immigration records during an appearance on Fox News.
“If you have citizenship in this country, your derivative citizenship, or your naturalization, your application, will turn on precise information, and you have an obligation to report that precise information,” Pirro said.
She added: “So the question is, who is Ilhan Omar, and has she followed all of the laws as it relates to naturalization and immigration.”
In a separate court motion, Pirro sought to prevent the search warrant from being unsealed, saying the government had not finished executing it.
What Has Omar Said About the Investigation?
Speaking to MS NOW's Chris Hayes, Omar said she was confident she had done nothing wrong. She also said the threats she had received after the search meant she could no longer safely remain in her Washington apartment.“I am a person of enormous faith,” she said. “And I know that … if I continue to live my truth, if I continue to fight for the right things, if I continue to stand up to bullies and people who are carrying out ungodly corruption, I’m going to be OK.”
Trump has demanded Omar's removal from Congress before, including during his first term, when he criticized comments he described as antisemitic.
The dispute over Omar's name, marriage and immigration history continues. The allegations remain contested, and the information provided does not establish that she used a fake name to commit fraud. The information is taken from Fox News, The Hill and The New Republic.
