The investigation has also put a recent search of her Washington home in the spotlight. Omar’s lawyers are now demanding the return of property seized by federal agents. The information is taken from The Daily Mail.
Where is Ilhan Omar, and what did she say in her video
Omar appeared in a roughly one-minute video filmed while she was riding in a vehicle. She used the message to thank people who had sent donations, including small contributions of $5, $10 and $20, and asked them to keep supporting her.'Hi everyone, Ilhan here,' she began.
She thanked supporters for standing by her as she faced what she described as efforts by President Donald Trump and his administration to intimidate her and others ahead of the midterm elections.
'We know that they're running scared,' Omar said, before adding: 'We're not going to be intimidated. We're not going to be silenced. We're not going to be scared.'
She also made clear that she intended to stay on the campaign trail and work toward Democratic victories in Congress.
'I'll be out there campaigning alongside all of you and making sure that we beat back all of this and that we win in the midterms - win the House, win the Senate and hold this administration accountable,' she said.
Omar ended the video by thanking her supporters again and asking them to continue donating. She acknowledged that the months ahead would be expensive and challenging.
What is the federal investigation into Omar about
Federal investigators are examining questions about Ilhan Omar’s citizenship application, including whether her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, gave an incorrect age for her during his naturalization process.According to Fox News, agents from Homeland Security Investigations went to Omar’s home in Washington on October 12. They took her phone, her passport and her computer. Some reports say that investigators also got DNA evidence.
The New York Post said that a person close to the case connected the DNA evidence to claims that Omar married her brother to help him get a card. Omar says she did nothing. There are no criminal charges against her.
She has described the investigation as politically motivated and previously called questions about her immigration status 'absurd and offensive.'
What have federal officials and Omar’s lawyers said
Border czar Tom Homan told Fox News that investigators believed they had a 'strong case'. He said citizenship could be revoked if evidence showed that someone had lied during the naturalization process.'We've done it before, and it is a long, tedious process, but it's been done before,' Homan said. Omar’s legal team has pushed back, demanding the immediate return of property seized during the search. Her attorneys argue that the investigation is unlawful and politically motivated.
They said there was 'no legitimate basis for any suggestion that she has violated any law concerning her citizenship status.'
Justice Department spokesperson Emily Covington rejected the lawyers’ claims, describing their letter as 'riddled with false allegations and inaccuracies.' She said federal attorneys and law enforcement officials had followed court orders and their legal obligations.
The citizenship investigation is not the only matter drawing attention. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro has also said her office would examine Omar’s financial disclosures. The House ethics watchdog had recommended dismissing allegations related to those filings. Omar has not been charged with a crime. For now, she says she will continue campaigning and relying on her supporters while the investigation moves forward.
