- He learnt his politics when he headed the Rajasthan unit of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student's wing of the Congress party
- Gehlot was the president of the Rajasthan unit of the NSUI from 1974 to 1979. He then served as the president of the Jodhpur district Congress Committee from 1979 to 1982. Eventually, he was elevated to the post of general secretary, Rajasthan Congress
- A dedicated supporter of the Gandhi family, he was handpicked by Indira Gandhi in the early ’70s and has spent over 40 years in politics, shuttling between state and central politics
- The senior Congressman, who maintains a low profile, has always been interested in Rajasthan politics. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 and subsequently won the elections four more times
- He has served as a minister in the governments headed by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao. He headed various ministries like tourism, civil aviation, sports and textiles between 1982 and 1993
- In 1998, Gehlot became the chief minister of Rajasthan for the first time, riding a strong anti-incumbency wave symbolised by the “onion crisis”. His second term was from 2008 to 2013
- Gehlot, who belongs to the Mali (gardener) community, has represented the Jodhpur district's Sardarpura Assembly constituency since 1999. He has won the seat five consecutive times
- Prior to the Gujarat Assembly elections in 2017, he was made the state's Congress national general secretary (organisations and training) and headed the party affairs. The grand old party could not win but managed to give the BJP a big scare
- Along with the late Ahmed Patel, he played the role of a master strategist to give a tough fight to Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in their home turfs
- Gehlot's smart campaign management strategy in Gujarat strengthened his position in front of the party chief, and he was chosen as the chief minister of Rajasthan after the Congress' victory in the 2018 Assembly polls
