Think your mornings are healthy? This one habit might be spiking your blood sugar
Many people rush in the morning and pick quick food like a chocolate muffin and a hazelnut latte for breakfast. Experts say this kind of sugary breakfast can push your blood sugar up very fast. Registered dietitian Amy Huelle says this fast rise and fall in blood sugar creates an “energy roller coaster” as stated by EatingWell.

“This roller coaster can lead people to feel hungry, tired, irritable in some cases, and not as mentally sharp or able to focus,” says Huelle. She also adds that you may even feel hungrier than before eating the sugary meal. Another expert, Andrea Miller, says sugary breakfasts raise blood glucose very quickly, especially when the meal has low protein, fiber, or healthy fat.

Sugary breakfast and blood sugar spike

Miller explains that the body then releases a lot of insulin, which makes blood sugar drop fast afterward. “Some people can actually release too much insulin after a high sugar meal and their body overcompensates, causing their blood glucose to drop too low,” Miller says. She says this condition is called “reactive hypoglycemia.”

Miller adds that big sugar spikes and drops can make some people tired, low-energy, and craving even more sugar. She says, “It can be a vicious cycle”. Huelle says different people feel different symptoms after sugary breakfasts, and some feel nothing at all. She adds that people with healthy blood sugar still have body systems that keep sugar levels steady. Miller says, “It is important to remember that one meal or an occasional day of [sugary meals] is not going to have long-term effects.” EatingWell.

Balanced breakfast choices

She says the main thing that matters is overall diet quality. Experts recommend building a balanced breakfast with protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep blood sugar stable. Huelle says, “Protein and fiber slow down digestion and keep blood sugar nice and steady, not a roller coaster ride like sugary refined carbohydrates”. She suggests Greek-style yogurt with berries and seeds or a veggie omelet with whole-grain toast as better options.

Miller recommends pairing carbs with protein, like adding Greek-style yogurt or protein powder to oatmeal. Other protein options include eggs, cottage cheese, tofu, beans, nuts, and seeds, EatingWell notes. Experts warn that sugary drinks like sweetened lattes, juices, soda, and energy drinks can cause fast blood sugar spikes. They suggest reducing sweeteners or choosing unsweetened drinks more often. Experts also say choosing whole grains instead of refined carbs helps stop sharp blood sugar spikes.

Other morning tips for steady blood sugar

Huelle says whole grains “slow carbohydrate absorption, blunt blood sugar spikes and promote satiety,” as per the report by EatingWell. Light activity like a 10–15-minute walk after meals can lower blood sugar, Huelle says. She also says sleep quality and duration affect blood sugar and risk for type 2 diabetes.

Some people are sensitive to caffeine and may get a blood sugar spike even from unsweetened coffee, experts say. Experts say a sugary breakfast may feel good for a moment but often leads to crashes and sugar cravings later. They say occasional sweets are fine, but most days should start with a balanced meal for steady energy.
