Berlin Global Dialogue: Goyal says India’s trade deals could cover $85 tn of $115 tn global GDP
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal outlined India’s expanding free trade agreement (FTA) network after 2014, saying nine agreements covering 38 countries had been concluded over the preceding four-and-a-half years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He said these countries represent a combined GDP of around $60 trillion, compared with $10 trillion covered by India’s earlier FTAs. Goyal said ongoing and prospective trade negotiations could expand the opportunity to economies representing $85 trillion, or 76% of global GDP. He also said the India-EU trade agreement, announced on January 27, was expected to be signed before the end of 2026 and potentially operationalised in the first quarter of 2027.
