Scientists Find 3 Minutes of One Activity Can Trigger a Massive Molecular Response (AI generated image)

For people who keep putting off exercise because they do not have 60 or 90 minutes to spare, new research offers an interesting reason to rethink that excuse. Scientists have found that just three minutes of all-out sprinting can produce a much larger molecular response in the body than 90 minutes of moderate exercise.

Researchers at Rockefeller University studied how different levels of exercise affect the bloodstream and found that about three minutes of actual sprinting produced a much larger immediate molecular response than 90 minutes of moderate cycling. The study involved six 30-second all-out cycling sprints, with recovery periods between them. The findings were published in research examining how exercise intensity affects the body's plasma secretome and communication between organs.

What three minutes of sprinting did

The difference between the two workouts was quite striking. The sprint session changed nearly a quarter of the proteins measured in the blood immediately after exercise. By comparison, 90 minutes of moderate cycling changed fewer than one-quarter of one percent of the proteins.


Moderate treadmill running produced a bigger response than cycling, but it still did not come close to the changes seen after sprinting.

The researchers also detected changes in more than 200 metabolites after the intense workout. Several of the proteins affected were involved in blood-vessel growth, tissue repair and hormonal signalling.

Paul Cohen, an Albert Resnick Associate Professor at Rockefeller University, explained the purpose of the research to Newsweek: "Our work was designed to test whether different exercise modalities elicit distinct whole-body responses as assessed by measuring a very large panel of proteins, metabolites, and lipids in the bloodstream, which we found to be the case." Cohen's Rockefeller laboratory studies molecular processes linked to metabolism, obesity and related diseases.

The response was seen in fat cells too

The changes were not limited to what could be measured in blood. Researchers exposed human fat cells to blood collected after the workouts and found that blood taken after sprinting caused substantial changes in gene activity.

The cells changed the way they handled fuel, responded to hormones and detected nutrients. After moderate cycling, similar tests produced only minor changes, and some of the endurance-related proteins and fatty acids appeared later, around three hours after exercise.

Cohen said in a statement: “What’s exciting here is that just a few minutes of intense exercise can trigger a significant molecular response. And we still see it after eight weeks of training, which tells us this response isn’t simply a product of the body struggling to keep up with unfamiliar stress. It may be that the responses we observed are intrinsic to intense exercise.”

Another study looked at cancer risk

A separate 2026 study involving 59,218 UK Biobank participants also pointed towards the importance of exercise intensity. Researchers found that three additional minutes of vigorous physical activity per day was associated with a 4% lower cancer hazard in their statistical analysis, while more than 90 minutes of light activity was needed for a similar association. The study was based on wearable-device data and long-term health outcomes, so it does not mean that doing three minutes of exercise will directly cut an individual's cancer risk by 4%.

The researchers also found that replacing periods of sitting with movement was associated with lower cancer hazard, suggesting that simply breaking up long periods of inactivity matters too.

It does not mean longer exercise is useless

The findings should not be read as a reason to completely abandon walking, jogging, cycling or longer workouts. The studies are mainly showing that intensity can produce effects that are different from simply exercising for a longer period.

Cohen told Newsweek: "In general, the literature in the field does suggest that combining different types of exercise is a wise approach, though given many people's sedentary lifestyles, any type of physical activity and/or exercise is likely to provide some benefits."

So the practical point is fairly simple. A long workout is not the only option, especially for people who struggle to find the time. Short bursts of genuinely vigorous activity can produce a strong biological response, while regular movement throughout the day remains important too.
