As the year’s Formula One World Championship races closer to the finale, here are 10 points you need to know ahead of all that goes down in the high altitude circuit.

1. Construction of the racing circuit began in Mexico City’s Magdalena Mixiuhca sports park using the existing internal roads in 1959 following instruction from Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateo. The work was completed in less than a year’s time.

2. Crowds spilling onto the edges of this high-speed track led to Mexico losing its race after 1970. The circuit got its race back in 1986 and held onto it for six more years.

3. The circuit sits almost two-km above sea level, making the 4.3 km lap a breathless experience.

4. While the track still follows the original 1959 circuit, the fearsome Peraltada corner is now bisected. The circuit now winds through the old Foro Sol baseball stadium, providing one of F1’s most unique vistas.

6. While Valtteri Bottas will race to beat his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton as he did in Suzuka, Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc in Ferrari will hope not to repeat any mistakes or face issues like they did in the island country.

7. Hamilton, who is enjoying a 64-point lead over teammate Bottas after Suzuka, can wrap up a third consecutive drivers’ crown if he outscores his teammate by 14 points or more. But it’s not going to be an easy time for him in the highaltitude track of Mexico.
