Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise made a grand entry at the 75th Cannes Film Festival for the screening of his much-awaited action film 'Top Gun: Maverick'.

With the sky filled in red, white and blue colours, and the air ringing with loud applause and screams of 'Tom', the star made a spectacular entrance. While Cruise arrived dramatically by helicopter at the film's San Diego premiere, he came to the Cannes premiere more traditionally, accompanied by the film's cast and film-makers in convoy of cars.

After making his entrance, Cruise paused for several minutes to sign autographs and take pictures with fans lined up across the street from the red carpet, waiting for hours to catch his glimpse.

Day two at Cannes was all about Cruise and rightly so, as the 'Top Gun: Maverick', the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 blockbuster, marks his return to the festival three decades since the screening of 'Far and Away' in 1992.

The Hollywood Reporter quoted that the grand and gladiator-type entry of the 'Mission Impossible' star included eight fighter jets zooming above the podium, in red-and-blue colours synchronised to match the French flag.

"I make movies for the big screen. Cinema is my love, my passion. I always go to movies when they come out. I'll put my cap on and sit in the audience with everyone," the 59-year-old actor said as he thanked everyone.

At the screening, the star also received an honorary Palme d'Or and a heart-touching 6-minute-long standing ovation. The Palme d'Or is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. It was introduced in 1955 by the festival's organising committee.

"In the history of cinema... he has one of the highest success rates," festival director Thierry Fremaux said.

Cast members Danny Ramirez, Miles Teller, Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly and Glen Powell arrive for the screening of 'Top Gun: Maverick'.
"This is someone that we haven't seen on streaming platforms, TV series, or doing adverts.... He is someone who is devoted to cinema," the festival director added while welcoming Cruise to Cannes.

The film, which also stars Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer and more, is the last pandemic-delayed flick to hit the screens.

During a Q&A, Cruise won hearts for his reply to a question: "You risk your life, monsieur. Why do you do it?"

The question referred to the actor doing his own action stunts in his action-packed thrillers.

"No one asked Gene Kelly, 'Why do you dance? Why do you do your own dancing?" the star responded in his own quirky style.
