Put on your shades! Deepika Padukone in black-and-gold Sabyasachi saree brings a blinding blaze of bling to Cannes

While the blingy and over-the-top style was a bit overdone and failed to add any freshness to the Cannes look book this year, the actress seemed very happy with her ensemble.

Deepika Padukone brought retro drama to Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet as she donned a black-and -gold sequined Sabyasachi saree that’s creating quite a buzz on social media.

The actress stepped out on the hallowed steps of Cannes Film Festival sporting a modern rendition of '60s bouffant hairstyle pushed behind by a golden beaded headband. She wore six-inch tall black heels, dangling chandelier earrings which were as long as her Nerfertiti-like neck, and teamed up these accessories up with a black-and-gold sequined saree made by Indian designer Sabyasachi. She wore the saree with a black shimmery bikini top. The ‘Piku’ star also sported several huge blingy rings on her fingers, and flaunted a black nail paint.

While the designer claims that the saree was inspired by the stripes of the Royal Bengal Tiger which was block printed and hand-embroidered by craftsman who work for him, it looked heavily reminiscent of the blingy sarees that Bollywood actresses often don at award shows. The entire ensemble also looked heavily reminiscent of Padukone’s blingy look from the the premiere of ‘Chhapak’, during which the actress had worn a blue sequin saree, also designed by Sabyasachi.

In fact, the actress took a page out of her own stylebook for this Cannes look as her bouffant hair was reminiscent of her debut film ‘Om Shanti Om’ style in which she played an yesteryear actress.

Sharing a series of photos in her Cannes look on Instagram, Padukone wrote, "The sari is a story I will never stop telling. No matter where we are in the world, it has its place," said Sabyasachi Mukherjee...and I couldn't agree more!"

While we all may not agree with the actress and the designer, her hundred watt smile alone can win any red carpet moment, so we are definitely not complaining that Padukone is representing us at the global prestigious event. At the event, Padukone posed with fellow jury members - Rebecca Hall, Noomi Rapace and Jasmine Trinca, Asghar Farhadi, Ladj Ly, Jeff Nichols and Joachim Trier - during the opening ceremony. This is her first stint at being a jury member at Cannes.

Padukone, who became a Louis Vuitton brand ambassador earlier this month, donned a black mini Louis Vuitton dress for the jury dinner on Monday.

The Indian pavilion made a splash at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

From making heads turn on the red carpet to hosting an intimate dinner, the Indian delegation made an impression at the highly-anticipated gala.

India has been chosen as the 'Country of Honor' this year to mark the 75th year of Cannes Film Festival, which coincides with India's 75th year of Independence.

Led by Union Minister Anurag Thakur, actress Deepika Padukone, Tamannaah Bhatia, Urvashi Rautela and Pooja Hegde; musicians Ricky Kej, AR Rahman, Mame Khan; actors R Madhavan, Kamal Haasan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, other renowned personalities like Shekhar Kapur and Prasoon Joshi were in attendance.
