The top four performers were mid-cap funds. Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund, which topped the list, delivered an absolute return of 169.84% over the past five years. HDFC Mid-Cap Fund, the largest mid-cap fund by assets under management (AUM), delivered an absolute return of 146.21% during the same period.

Invesco India Midcap Fund and Nippon India Growth Mid Cap Fund delivered absolute returns of 144.32% and 139.81%, respectively, over the past five years.
The next two spots were occupied by small-cap funds. Invesco India Smallcap Fund and Nippon India Small Cap Fund generated absolute returns of 133.48% and 133.16%, respectively.
HDFC Focused Fund delivered an absolute return of 132.05%, followed by Bandhan Small Cap Fund and Nippon India Multi Cap Fund, which returned 131.64% each over the same period.
Edelweiss Mid Cap Fund and Bank of India Small Cap Fund posted absolute returns of around 130% each. Sundaram Mid Cap Fund delivered 128.97%, followed by HDFC Flexi Cap Fund—the second-largest flexi-cap fund by assets under management (AUM)—with an absolute return of 127.80%.
Among large & mid-cap schemes, Motilal Oswal Large & Midcap Fund and Invesco India Large & Mid Cap Fund delivered absolute returns of 125.13% and 123.44%, respectively.
Quant Small Cap Fund returned 122.10%, followed by two schemes from ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund. ICICI Prudential Large & Mid Cap Fund and ICICI Prudential Midcap Fund delivered absolute returns of 121.57% and 121.05%, respectively.
Around seven funds generated absolute returns ranging between 113.32% and 119.12% over the five-year period. Franklin India Small Cap Fund, Motilal Oswal ELSS Tax Saver Fund, SBI ELSS Tax Saver Fund, and Sundaram Small Cap Fund each delivered returns of around 112%.
The next four funds generated returns of around 111% during the same period. SBI Contra Fund, the largest and oldest contra fund, delivered an absolute return of 108.45% over the past five years.
Another four funds posted returns of around 107%. Mahindra Manulife Multi Cap Fund returned 104.47%, while ITI Mid Cap Fund delivered 102.57%.
Quant Mid Cap Fund generated an absolute return of 102.34%, while ICICI Prudential Flexicap Fund and Baroda BNP Paribas Mid Cap Fund delivered 100.90% and 100.26%, respectively, over the last five years.

Canara Robeco Small Cap Fund delivered an absolute return of 99.41% over the past five years. Two schemes from Nippon India Mutual Fund—Nippon India Vision Large & Mid Cap Fund and Nippon India Value Fund—returned 97.64% and 97.26%, respectively, during the same period.
Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund, the largest active and flexi-cap fund by assets under management (AUM), delivered an absolute return of 80.42% over the past five years.
UTI Flexi Cap Fund and Axis Focused Fund were the last two funds on the list, delivering absolute returns of 35.19% and 29.78%, respectively, during the period.
For this analysis, we considered all equity mutual funds, excluding sectoral and thematic funds. Only regular-plan, growth-option schemes that completed five years were included. Absolute returns over the last five years were calculated for each scheme.
