Rani Mukerji’s mother, Krishna, passed away today, September 22. She was 75. Yash Raj Film issued a public statement confirming the news, requesting privacy in the moment of mourning. According to reports, Krishna suffered from a heart attack, but the Mukerji family is yet to announce the reason for her demise. Rani, who was last seen in Mardaani 3, shared a close bond with her mother and often talked about her fondly in interviews. During one such interaction, the actress revealed how she was exchanged at birth in the hospital, but her mother found her back by recognising Rani’s eye colour.

When Rani Mukerji was exchanged at hospital

Rani Mukerji, in a conversation with ABP News, recalled that she was mistakenly taken to the room of a Punjabi couple shortly after she was born. Her mother quickly realised that the baby brought back to her was not her daughter and immediately began looking for Rani.

Krishna had identified the mix-up after noticing that the baby did not have the brown eyes she remembered her daughter having. Rani’s mother then asked the hospital staff to search for her child. As the search continued, Rani was found with a Punjabi family who had welcomed a baby girl for the 8th time.


The Punjabi family later continued to joke about the mix-up, teasing Rani that she could have actually belonged to a Punjabi household but had accidentally ended up with her own family. Interestingly, Rani did get married to filmmaker and Yash Raj Films head Aditya Chopra, who is a Punjabi. The couple are proud parents to daughter Adira.

Rani Mukerji’s mother found her back

Previously, Rani had spoken about the same incident during an interaction with Simi Garewal. She explained that the mix-up happened while nurses were taking newborns away for routine procedures and using identification tags to keep track of them.

According to Rani, a nurse had taken her away for a routine change before returning with a baby to her mother. At the time, her mother was busy speaking with one of Rani’s uncles and initially did not focus on the baby.

However, Krishna soon looked closely at the child and realised that something was wrong. The difference in eye colour made her certain that the baby was not her daughter, prompting her to ask the family to locate Rani.
