Imtiaz Ali's Main Vaapas Aaunga turned out to be one of the biggest surprise success stories of 2026. Despite a slow start at the box office after its theatrical release in June, the Partition-era romantic drama steadily won over audiences through positive word of mouth. Backed by emotional storytelling and powerful performances from Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina and Sharvari Wagh, the film completed an impressive 50-day theatrical run and emerged as a sleeper hit.

Streaming details of the movie Main Vaapas Aaunga

Those who missed the film in cinemas will soon be able to watch it at home. Main Vaapas Aaunga will begin streaming exclusively on Netflix from August 7, 2026. The film, which released in theatres on June 12, has been acquired by the streaming platform for its digital premiere, making it available to audiences across India.

Jointly produced by Applause Entertainment and Window Seat Films, Main Vaapas Aaunga stars Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari Wagh and Vedang Raina in key roles. The period drama is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and tells an emotional story of love, memory, separation and belonging across generations.

What is the movie Main Vaapas Aaunga about?

The story revolves around 95-year-old Ishar Singh Grewal, played by Naseeruddin Shah, who is nearing the end of his life but remains haunted by memories of his first love and the home he left behind during Partition. His final wish is to return to his birthplace in pre-Partition Punjab, which now lies across the India-Pakistan border.

Determined to fulfil his grandfather's wish, Nirvair, played by Diljit Dosanjh, begins a journey to uncover his family's forgotten past. As the story unfolds through conversations between the grandfather and grandson, viewers are taken back to Ishar's younger days, portrayed by Vedang Raina.

The flashbacks introduce Afsana, played by Sharvari Wagh, and explore how the Partition changed countless lives forever. Rather than focusing only on historical events, the film uses a deeply personal story to examine love, displacement, grief and the emotional scars carried by generations affected by one of the biggest tragedies in the Indian subcontinent's history.

The film received praise for balancing romance with history while exploring the meaning of home and identity. Naseeruddin Shah's performance, in particular, was widely appreciated for bringing emotional depth to the elderly Ishar Singh Grewal.

From slow start to sleeper hit

When Main Vaapas Aaunga opened in theatres on June 12, its box office collections were modest. However, strong audience feedback and positive reviews helped the film gain momentum over the following weeks.
