A healthy diet does not have to be overly complicated to be nutritious. Chia seeds have become a staple in many households. They are rich in fibre, offering plant-based omega-3 fatty acid ALA, with 2 tablespoons providing about 11 grams of fibre. Yet eating them the same way every morning can become repetitive, especially for those tired of familiar chia pudding. The good news is that there are versatile chia seed recipes that you can easily prepare at home. Harvard-trained gut doctor Dr Saurabh Sethi recently shared 5 tasty ways to enjoy chia seeds.

Ground chia nut butter

For a quick, filling spread, Dr Sethi suggests combining 2 tablespoons of peanut or almond butter with one tablespoon of ground chia seeds. The mixture can be spread over toast or paired with sliced apples and bananas. Nut butters add protein and healthy unsaturated fats, while chia contributes fibre and plant-based omega-3 ALA. Ground chia can also blend more easily into the creamy texture, making this a convenient option for breakfast or a snack.

Chia yoghurt

Greek yoghurt gets an extra nutritional boost with chia seeds, berries and a little honey. Dr Sethi recommends combining 1 cup of Greek yoghurt with 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, half a cup of berries and one tablespoon of honey, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. The seeds absorb moisture and develop a soft, gel-like texture. Meanwhile, yoghurt provides protein and berries add fruit, flavour and additional fibre, creating a simple breakfast or snack.

Chia applesauce

This combination is another simple way to incorporate chia without making pudding. Mix 8 ounces of applesauce with 1 tablespoon of chia seeds and refrigerate it for 2 hours or overnight. Finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon before serving. Apples provide naturally occurring fibre, while chia thickens the applesauce as it absorbs liquid. This can work as a quick snack or a topping when you want something sweet without relying on a more elaborate recipe.

Chia ice cream

Chia seeds can even make their way into a frozen treat. Blend 2 cups of frozen fruit with 3-quarters of a cup of Greek yoghurt and 1 tablespoon of chia seeds. The mixture can be eaten immediately for a soft-serve-like consistency or frozen for a firmer dessert. The fruit brings natural sweetness, while Greek yoghurt contributes protein. Chia adds fibre and healthy fats, making this a creative alternative to traditional ice cream.

Chia jam

For a homemade fruit spread, mash 1 cup of raspberries or mango with 1 tablespoon of chia seeds and honey. Refrigerate the mixture for about 2 to 4 hours, allowing the chia to absorb moisture and naturally thicken the fruit. It can then be used as a spread or topping. Raspberries can also contribute additional fibre, making this an easy way to combine fruit with the nutritional benefits of chia seeds.
