Why did Taylor Swift donate $1 million to the food bank?
Helping Harvest confirmed the donation in a news release. The Reading-based food bank is one of 20 charities sharing a total of $26 million donated by Swift and Kelce. The organization serves people in Berks and Schuylkill counties and works with Feeding America. It distributed 11.1 million pounds of food in 2025, a record at the time. Now, it expects that figure to reach 14 million pounds by the end of 2026.For Helping Harvest President Jay Worrall, the gift was a welcome surprise, especially as more people turn to food banks for help.
"We were so excited to learn of this unexpected but greatly appreciated donation from a global superstar who grew up right here in our service territory, Taylor Swift, and her fiancé, Travis Kelce," Worrall said in a statement.
He added, "At a time when more neighbors than ever are coming to food banks for assistance, Taylor and Travis' generosity will enable us to continue fulfilling our mission of providing nutritious food to people facing hunger in our communities."
Speaking to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Worrall said the money could help the food bank collect more surplus food and get it to people who need it.Some of the funding may go toward trucks or more warehouse space, which would help the organization store and distribute larger amounts of food. This could make a difference in how quickly and efficiently they can get food to people who need it. More trucks mean fewer delays and extra warehouse space means they can keep supplies on hand.
How will the donation help Helping Harvest?
The contribution comes as the food bank faces growing demand alongside cuts in federal support. Worrall told The Philadelphia Inquirer that state funding has increased, but not enough to make up for the reductions in federal resources. Changes to the SNAP program have added to the pressure.A recent audit showed that Helping Harvest received about $2.69 million in federal grants for the 2025 fiscal year, down from roughly $4.24 million in 2024.
The organization also received $459,000 from Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's administration last year to support a community kitchen. The kitchen provides culinary training and prepares meals for people in need.
Swift’s latest gift brings her support closer to home
Swift was born in West Reading and spent much of her childhood in nearby Wyomissing. She has supported food banks during her Eras Tour, including organizations in Nevada, Seattle and California. In December, she also donated $1 million to Feeding America. Her latest contribution supports a community she knows well, as Helping Harvest works to keep up with the growing number of people who need food assistance.
