In 2023, Colts QB Anthony Richardson bought his mother a house after growing up in hardship; here's the story behind his first major milestone
Before Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson made it to the NFL, life at home was far from easy. His mother worked multiple jobs to support the family, and there were times when food was scarce and the family had to sleep on the floor. In 2023, Richardson reached a milestone that meant more to him than football success. He bought his mother, LaShawnda Lane, and his younger brother, Corey Carter, a home of their own.

The achievement is a pure reflection of years of sacrifice, hard work and gratitude toward the people who stood by him. The information is taken from ClickOnDetroit.com and Fox 59 News.

How did Anthony Richardson’s childhood shape his journey

Richardson grew up watching his mother work hard to provide for the family. While she took on different jobs, he helped at home, looked after his younger brother and learned to cook with whatever food was available.

Sometimes, there was not enough to eat. Richardson recalled finding food at football practice and in his high school’s snack room.

“When I couldn't eat, I was eating at (football) practice,” the rookie said. “We had a snack room in high school, and I used to be in the snack room eating snacks because I didn't have any food at home. So all the things football has given me, I appreciate it. I'm thankful for it."

Money problems also affected his chances of becoming a professional athlete. Richardson could not afford to attend some elite quarterback camps, which limited his opportunities to get noticed by college recruiters. At one point, he even considered becoming a firefighter because an NFL career seemed uncertain.

Things began to change as he gained attention from recruiters. He eventually chose to play college football at the University of Florida, close to his high school in Gainesville.

From college football to the Indianapolis Colts

Anthony Richardson's athletic ability was exceptional. At the NFL scouting combine the 6-foot-4 quarterback ran the 40-yard dash in 4.43 seconds. Jumped 40.5 inches high. His performance made the Colts really interested. The team picked him fourth overall in the NFL draft.

The team later gave him a four-year contract worth $34 million, fully guaranteed. For Richardson, the opportunity offered more than a professional football career. It also meant greater financial security for his family.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard praised Richardson's composure and ability to learn from setbacks.

“There are going to be ups and downs — we know it, everybody in this room knows it. You've got to keep stepping up and learn from every situation — the good ones and the bad ones,” Ballard said.

Why buying his mother a house meant so much

Despite his growing success, Richardson said the most meaningful part of his journey was helping his mother and brother find a home of their own.

“They've always been with me and they're pretty much the only family I really knew growing up,” Richardson said.

He also remembered the times when the family had to sleep on the floor and had trouble getting enough food.

“There's been times we had to sleep on the floor, not having enough food, but not really complaining because my mom was grinding, trying to find a way for us and I'm forever thankful for that because it taught me how to go hard and never take what you have for granted.”

His story is a reminder that beyond contracts and achievements, on the field personal milestones can carry huge meaning.

Anthony Richardson is also facing a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge following a traffic stop in Carmel, Indiana, on October 12, according to court records cited by ESPN. An affidavit from the Hamilton County prosecutor’s office states that an officer stopped the Indianapolis Colts quarterback over questions about his vehicle’s registration and noticed the smell of marijuana. Richardson reportedly told the officer he had smoked marijuana inside the vehicle to avoid doing so at home around his children.
