Fresh start for Justin Herbert? Former NFL player proposes a Charger-Giants trade for QB
Justin Herbert is navigating a tough season, reflected in the Chargers' unfortunate 0-5 record. Former NFL star Terron Armstead has put forward a recommendation for the Giants to target a trade for Herbert, suggesting they part with two first-roun...

In five games this season, Justin Herbert has thrown for 937 yards and five touchdowns.
Amid Herbert’s struggles, former NFL Offensive tackle Terron Armstead has proposed an intriguing trade between the Los Angeles Chargers and the New York Giants.
Appearing on CBS Sports’ 'Just Football', Armstead weighed in on Herbert’s situation and urged the Giants to pursue the Chargers quarterback, arguing that he could help them take control of the division.
Armstead believes Giants general manager Joe Schoen should go all out to acquire Herbert, even if it means sending two first-round picks and quarterback Jaxson Dart to Los Angeles.
Although he acknowledged Herbert’s struggles this season, Armstead believes the Oregon alum has the talent and experience to become a franchise quarterback in New York.
"For the Giants, they really have the opportunity to own the division and make some noise. Now my question was if you are the Giants GM, do you put together a package to trade for Justin Herbert right now? Now if the ask is two first-round picks and Jaxson Dart, do you make that trade as the GM?"
WHY ARE TRADE RUMORS SURROUNDING JUSTIN HERBERT?
Well, the trade rumors are swirling around because of Herbert struggles and disappointing start to the season for the Chargers. The Bolts are 0-5 this season, far away from the playoff spots.
WHY IS HERBERT STRUGGLING THIS SEASON?
There is no single reason for his struggles, but one of the biggest changes from last season has been the introduction of the new offensive system under offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
The former Dolphins head coach became the Chargers OC this summer, bringing a reputation for designing creative, complex offensive schemes. McDaniel was expected to revitalise the Bolts’ offense, but the early results have been far from encouraging.
From the outside, Herbert looks to be struggling to find his rhythm in the new system. He looks uncomfortable in executing the new offense.
The Oregon Alum is someone who has excelled as a QB when he was allowed to go with his instinct and work through his natural progression. However, McDaniels' system demands his QB to see the whole field and make decisions according to the opposition’s pass coverage. Herbert has found it challenging to do that.
But all the blame should not fall on the former Dolphins HC. The Chargers QB has struggled with decision-making and has been unsteady in the middle, taking a lot of sacks and failing to protect the ball consistently. To make scoring plays out of nothing, he has put the ball in harm’s way, turning the ball over on numerous occasions.
Injuries along the offensive line have further complicated matters. Offensive tackles Joe Alt, Rashawn Slater, and Trey Pipkins, guards Trevor Penning and Kayode Awosika, and center Tyler Biadasz have all been sidelined with injuries.
With so many players missing from the O-Line, it’s not surprising that Justin has faced a lot of pressure, which has resulted in him taking 17 sacks and 98 hits this season.
His main receivers, Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston, have spent a lot of time on the sidelines. Newly signed Tight End David Njoku has also been out with a fibula issue.
COULD A TRADE GIVE HERBERT A FRESH START?
Justin Herbert’s progression as an NFL QB has stalled. He has always struggled during the playoffs. Now, he is struggling even during the regular season. He still has a lot of good years left in him, and a change in scenery could help him revive his career.
The Giants are an interesting destination as they are a team on the rise. They have a good receiving core, a solid Offensive line, and a good defense. While Jaxson Dart has shown promise, Herbert will be a big upgrade for them.
The Big Blue has been looking for a franchise QB since Eli Manning’s retirement, and Herbert could be the answer.
Will the Chargers trade their franchise QB? Unlikely, at least not in the middle of the season. But if the Giants put together a great package, maybe they can turn some heads inside the Bolts building.
Two first-round picks and Jaxson Dart - that’s a lot of draft capital to part with. Whether it is enough for the Bolts to give away their franchise QB is another question.
For now, these are just rumors and interesting scenarios and nothing more.
