Aaron Donald finally seemed like he was about to make his first sack since coming back to the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams in their Monday Night Football (MNF) clash with the Buffalo Bills. But what could have been a moment of glory for the veteran defender became frustration as a penalty took away his impressive effort against the quarterback Josh Allen. Donald, who returned to football after more than two years in retirement, was denied a major milestone despite making a brilliant defensive play.

WHY WAS AARON DONALD'S FIRST SACK AGAINST BILLS OVERTURNED?

This all transpired during the Week 5 game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Buffalo Bills that took place at SoFi Stadium on Monday. While on a sack play, the star player managed to break through the Bills' offensive line and sacked Josh Allen. But the celebrations were soon ended, because the Rams got penalized for illegal contact by the defensive secondary, and thus Donald's sack and touchdown attempt did not happen.

The flag was unrelated to Donald's actual tackle, making the moment particularly frustrating for the veteran defender. The 35-year-old was looking for his first official sack of the 2026 NFL season following his return to the Rams. Although the play was reversed, Donald showed the explosive ability and pass-rushing skills that made him one of the scariest defensive players in the NFL.

AARON DONALD'S NFL COMEBACK ADDS INTRIGUE TO BILLS VS RAMS SHOWDOWN

Donald came back to Los Angeles after having been away from professional football for more than two years, providing the Rams a huge lift to their defensive squad. But his return hasn’t been all smooth sailing, as he missed the last game of the Rams against the Philadelphia Eagles due to an injury to his back.

The Bills vs Rams game was filled with expectations because both teams wanted to set their feet in being among the Super Bowl contenders. For Donald, it was yet another chance to prove that he can make a mark against top-notch NFL teams.

Although the penalty denied him an official sack, his ability to reach Allen provided a glimpse of his trademark defensive dominance. Donald will now have to wait a little longer to celebrate his first official sack since returning to the NFL.
