Bitcoin price prediction: Why BTC USD can drop before a Fed rate hike and rally after
The seemingly conflicting move is a reflection of how markets react to expectations. Often investors are moving before an official announcement. Meaning some of the expected impact may already be reflected in prices by the time the decision arrives.
Why Rising Interest Rates Could Weigh on Bitcoin (BTC USD)
Bitcoin does not give any interest or dividends. It relies on its price rising to make a return on it which can make it less attractive when traditional investments give a higher yieldTreasury bonds, savings accounts and certificates of deposit can provide interest income. When interest rates rise, these alternatives can become more appealing to investors weighing where to put their money.
Bitcoin has also tended to behave like a risk-sensitive asset rather than a dependable hedge against market turmoil. Former Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard discussed the correlation between crypto assets, riskier stocks and broader investor risk appetite in a speech on cryptocurrency and financial stability, as per MoneyLion report.
As a result, concerns about higher borrowing costs can put pressure on Bitcoin alongside other risk-sensitive investments.
Why Bitcoin Rebounded After the Fed’s September Rate Hike
BTC USD came under pressure in September as traders anticipated a rate increase. On September 16, the Federal Reserve raised its target interest rate range by a quarter of a percentage point, marking its first increase in more than three years.Bitcoin did not continue falling immediately after the announcement. As per CoinDesk, the cryptocurrency climbed modestly above $76000 by the following morning.
The explanation was that much of the expected negative news had already been reflected in prices, while the rate increase was not more aggressive than anticipated. Attention then shifted to the Fed’s next moves.
The central bank’s September projections pointed to only limited additional rate increases, easing concerns about a prolonged series of aggressive hikes. Bitcoin subsequently staged a relief rally.
How Cooler Inflation Helped Bitcoin Rise in July
A similar pattern emerged in July, when some market participants were preparing for a possible rate hike but inflation came in cooler than expected.Bitcoin increased about 3.6% on July 15, as per CoinDesk. The softer inflation reading reduced concerns about further rate increases, giving risk sensitive assets more room to recover.
The July and September episodes had different immediate triggers but both illustrated how expectations about monetary policy can influence Bitcoin before the outlook becomes clearer.
Fed Policy Is Not the Only Factor Affecting Bitcoin
Interest rates are an important influence on BTC but they are not the only factor moving its price, supply and demand, geopolitical developments, exchange-traded fund flows, regulation and cryptocurrency specific news can also affect market movements. So this makes it difficult to predict BTC's direction based on a single Federal Reserve announcement. Even when rates rise the cryptocurrency can recover if investors have already accounted for the decision and become less concerned about what comes next.
Bitcoin’s reaction to the Fed highlights the importance of expectations. A rate hike can put pressure on the cryptocurrency before the announcement, while the decision itself can trigger a rebound if it proves less worrying than investors had anticipated.
