71 year old Lal Thanhawla took the oath of office as chief for second consecutive term in Aizawl.

The Congress was defeated by the MNF in 1998 and in 2003. Lal Thanhawla became chief minister for the fourth time in 2008.

The MDA comprises the MNF, Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) and the Maraland Democratic Front (MDF).

Former chief minister Brig Thenphunga Sailo earlier urged legislators to work for development irrespective of party affiliations.
