Infosys has tightened its work from home (WFH) policy, adding new conditions to claim extra WFH days following in the footsteps of rival software exporters Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro.

The Bengaluru-headquartered company has capped extra WFH days, or exceptions to work from office (WFO), at five days a quarter. The system will not allow anything beyond this except in cases of critical medical conditions of the employee or dependents. Employees must back requests for exceptions with supporting documents including doctor’s verification.

Employees (at job level 5 and below) currently need to work from the office at least 10 days a month. The new cap is for requests seeking more WFH days.

Emails sent by a manager explaining the policy said he noticed a significant increase in emails requesting approval for additional WFH days. The mail asked team members to get pre-approval for any WFH request in the system, not on the email. They must plan and raise requests well in advance to avoid last-minute issues, it said. “If a request is not approved as per policy, there is very little that we, as managers, can do.”

Infosys did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Sources familiar with the matter said the company allows up to 30 additional remote workdays in cases involving critical medical situations.

The move comes despite Infosys stating earlier this month that it did not intend to alter its hybrid work policy. “We will remain flexible in the way we are today and the way our employees are interacting with the company and with our clients,” chief executive Salil Parekh said during a post-earnings press conference.

Infosys, India’s second-largest IT services firm with over 300,000 employees, announced its return-to-office policy on November 20, 2023, mandating at least 10 days of office attendance per month. While the policy came into effect in March last year, employees are required to spend a minimum of three hours per day in the office.

Rival Wipro has also tightened its WFO policy, effective January 1, requiring employees to work from the office for at least six hours a day, three days a week. The company has reduced permissible remote workdays to 12 from 15 earlier.

The policy changes come as the $283 billion IT industry faces muted revenue growth, with artificial intelligence increasingly replacing people-led delivery models.

TCS, India’s largest software exporter, last year implemented a five-day office workweek and linked variable pay to office attendance. The policy allows up to two WFH days a month for employees with health issues.

Industry experts say the need for greater collaboration amid rapidly changing project timelines is prompting tech firms to rein in remote work.

“As projects become shorter-term and companies need greater agility in manpower deployment, 2026 could see many firms pushing for full-time office attendance, at least on designated workdays,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, managing director at staffing firm CIEL HR.
