This 20-year-old Chinese restaurant in Bengaluru is run by a Mandarin family, but it serves veg-only food

For those who enjoy Chinese cuisine but follow a vegetarian diet, a small restaurant in Bengaluru’s Koramangala offers an entirely meat-free menu. Fortune Chinese Vegetarian Kitchen has been serving Chinese food in the city since 2006, with its dishes rooted in the culinary traditions of a family with Chinese origins.

The restaurant was founded and is managed by Jenny Cheng and her son William. Their grandfather came from Meizhou in China, and the family has continued its connection with Chinese cooking through the restaurant in Bengaluru.

The eatery was previously known as Luo Han before adopting its current name and moving to its present location.

A Chinese vegetarian kitchen in Koramangala

The restaurant recently received attention after the Instagram page Lets Eat Bengaluru featured it in a post, highlighting its simple and homely atmosphere.

The creators claimed that the restaurant serves only vegetarian food because the family follows Buddhism. The feature prompted several users to recall their own visits and express interest in trying the place.

“Finally a Chinese restaurant for vegetarians,” one user commented.

Another person who said they had visited the restaurant wrote, “Went there and it's really amazing. You need to wait for your order though, but it is worth the wait.”

A longtime customer also recalled one of the restaurant’s earlier dishes, saying, “Been visiting them since their HSR days and still visit them here. I really miss their Drums of Heaven (veg). It was a signature dish which tasted just like meat.”

Another comment referred to the restaurant’s earlier HSR location and its staff, asking, “Is the aunty still there who used to scold a lot, even for talking too loudly? But the food used to be worth the scoldings also.”

Customers recall the restaurant’s HSR days

Several comments focused on the family-run nature of the restaurant and its history.

One user said, “My sister was given a Buddhist book by these lovely people as a child. Back when they used to be in HSR.”

The restaurant also attracted interest from a non-vegetarian commenter, who wrote, “Bruh, I'm a non-vegetarian, but two people feeding us from their home kitchen and cooking with cleanliness. SOLD. I want to go here ASAP.”

The comments suggest that the restaurant has retained customers who have been visiting since its earlier days in HSR, while the recent social-media feature introduced it to a wider audience.

What to order at Fortune Chinese Vegetarian Kitchen

Lets Eat Bengaluru suggested several dishes for visitors to try, including steamed wontons, chilli garlic flat noodles, vegetable mini spring rolls, Mapo tofu and chilli garlic fried rice.

The restaurant has four tables inside, meaning diners may have to wait for seating during busy periods. Orders can also take some time to arrive because the dishes are prepared only after they are ordered.

Fortune Chinese Vegetarian Kitchen is open from 11 am to 9 pm and is closed on Tuesdays. A meal for two costs around Rs 600, according to the information shared in the feature.
