What happens if you miss the deadline
California voters who miss the regular registration deadline can still go to their county elections office, a vote center or a polling place on or before Election Day and complete conditional voter registration. The California Secretary of State says this process is often referred to as “Same Day Voter Registration.” Voters can contact their county elections office for more information.
This option is especially important for people who realize late in the election process that they are not registered or need to update their registration.
Voters who have not missed the deadline can register or update their information online at registertovote.ca.gov. Physical voter registration applications are also available at post offices, county elections offices and libraries.
How does Same Day Voter Registration (Conditional Voter Registration) work?
Conditional Voter Registration is described by the California Secretary of State as a safety net for Californians who miss the normal registration deadline or need to update their voter registration information.Eligible voters complete the registration process and vote a provisional ballot. The ballot is not simply discarded because the voter registered late. County election officials review the registration and verify the voter’s eligibility before processing the ballot.
This option is available at county elections offices, polling places and vote centers. California’s election calendar also lists the conditional registration period as October 20 through November 3 for the 2026 General Election.
Voters who are unsure about their registration status can check it through the “My Voter Status” tool before heading out to vote.
How can you check your voter registration
Before Election Day, voters can check their registration status through the “My Voter Status” tool. The tool can help voters confirm their registration information and check whether they are registered. It is also useful for anyone who is unsure about their current voter registration status. For the November 3 election, all active registered voters will be mailed a ballot. Counties will begin mailing ballots no later than October 5.
Registered voters will also receive the State Official Voter Information Guide a few weeks before Election Day. The guide will also be available online.
How can you still vote if you do not have your ballot
If a ballot does not arrive, or if the original ballot is lost or damaged, voters can request a replacement ballot.A replacement ballot can also be requested from the county elections office by phone, email, fax or another electronic method.
For voters who already have their ballot, there are several ways to return it. A ballot can be personally delivered to a polling place or ballot drop-off location in California by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
Voters can also return their ballot in person at a polling location. Polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Ballots can also be mailed. Mailed ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day. The state recommends mailing them at least seven days ahead of time. Anyone mailing a ballot on November 3 should get a manual postmark from a postal employee inside a United States Post Office.
How do you track your ballot
California voters can use the “Where’s My Ballot?” tool to receive updates about their returned ballot.Notifications can be sent by text message, email or voice call. Voters can also use the “My Voter Status” tool to check whether their vote was counted.
If you missed the registration deadline, remember that California’s conditional voter registration process gives you another opportunity to register and vote in the November 3, 2026, General Election.
