Which Chip City stores have closed?
According to The Hartford Courant, Chip City has shut its three Connecticut locations in Fairfield, Darien and West Hartford. The stores were located at 112 Heights Road in Darien, 1125 Post Road in Fairfield and 67 Memorial Road in West Hartford. All three have been removed from Chip City’s website, while Google lists them as “permanently closed.”
The company did not immediately provide a reason for the Connecticut closures and a representative was not immediately available for comment.
Chip City still lists locations in New York, New Jersey and Texas on its website.
The chain started in Queens in 2017 and grew quickly from its original 250-square-foot storefront. Childhood friends Teddy Gailas and Peter Phillips built the brand around thick, gooey cookies, social media and a rotating selection of flavors.

Is the cookie shop boom slowing down?
Chip City is not the only cookie business facing a pullback. The chain also recently closed three Northern Virginia locations in Clarendon, Shirlington and Tysons. ArlNow.com reported that Chip City no longer lists any Virginia stores on its website. The Tysons location had opened just over a year earlier.Crumbl Cookies has also closed stores, including its Vienna location, which was its first in Virginia. Restaurant Business Online data cited in the supplied information shows that Crumbl’s store count dropped 16% from 2024 to 2025 as the company closed underperforming locations.
The wider cookie category had sales of $11.85 billion in the 52 weeks leading to July 2026, while the market stayed flat.
The change has taken place following several years of rapid expansion in the field of viral cookie companies. Crumbl helped the model become well known because of its changing flavors, special edition items and things that customers liked to share. These things made customers want to come again and again. Crumbl helped the model become well known because of its changing flavors, special edition items and things that customers liked to share. These things made customers want to come again and again.
But the trend now appears to be facing a tougher market.
In August 2026, The Cookie Factory, a 20-year-old New York State cookie bakery, closed its remaining physical stores and shifted its focus to supermarkets and regional convenience stores. The business had previously filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in September 2024.
Chip City’s latest expansion announcement came in December 2025, when it signed a contract for an 800-square-foot store at Marlton Commons shopping mall. Once open, that location would bring its New Jersey total to four.
For customers holding Chip City gift cards in the Northern Virginia area, MidnighTreats in Ballston said it would honor them through October 14.
The closures point to a broader change for the once-booming cookie shop market. As inflation and economic pressure continue, consumers are watching their spending more closely, including on social media-driven versions of familiar foods.
