Sony offers PS5 owners a trade-in deal before GTA 6 launch - here’s how much your used console could be worth

PS5 owners in US may get up to $400 in cash by trading in their consoles, as per an offer advertised in the PlayStation app. And the promotion comes just weeks before Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19.

Trade-in programme is managed by Back Market, which is a marketplace for refurbished electronics. Although the offer is being promoted through PlayStation app notifications, professional refurbishers working through Back Market assess the consoles and determine the final offers.

PS5 owners could get up to $400 for their used consoles

According to BGR report, some US PlayStation users have received notifications through the PlayStation app inviting them to trade in their PS5 consoles through Back Market.

The advertised maximum is $400 for a standard PS5 with a disc drive and at least two controllers in Grade 0 condition. This refers to a console in pristine condition, so owners should not expect to receive the full amount simply because their system is working.

The $400 figure is based on the average trade-in amount offered for a standard PS5 in Grade 0 condition with at least two controllers, as per Dexerto. The estimate was calculated using trade-in orders created between August 23 and September 22, 2026. The actual payout may vary depending on the console's condition and specifications.

As per BGR, the promotion is scheduled to run until December 31, 2026.

Back Market manages the trade-in process, not Sony

Despite the PlayStation branding, Sony is not directly purchasing the used consoles. Back Market manages the trade-in through its network of professional refurbishers. Who assesses the devices and make offers based on their condition and specifications.

Owners can request a valuation through the marketplace and send their console for assessment. Once the trade-in is completed, successful sellers receive payment by direct deposit rather than PlayStation Store credit.

How much does Back Market offer for different PS5 models

The $400 promotion advertised through the PlayStation app is separate from the trade-in estimates displayed on Back Market's US website.

The marketplace currently lists maximum offers of up to $415 for a standard PS5 and up to $385 for the Digital Edition.

These are separate marketplace estimates, not guaranteed payments. The final amount depends on the console's condition, specifications and included accessories.

GTA 6 arrives on PS5 and Xbox on November 19

The trade-in offer comes ahead of the November 19 launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar's upcoming game is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
