Buying GTA 6 in a box? Rockstar says no disc inside, just a code for a 212 GB download

GTA 6: A boxed copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 will not come with the one thing many physical game buyers expect to find inside, a disc. Rockstar Games has confirmed that customers purchasing the physical edition will instead receive a download code, which they can redeem to install the game digitally on their consoles.

That means buying GTA 6 from a retail store will not spare players from downloading the game. They will still need an internet connection and enough storage space to install it. Rockstar says the pre-load will require up to 212GB of available storage, depending on the device.

The physical edition is expected to become available for shipping and retailer pickup from November 12, a week before GTA 6's November 19, 2026, launch. Buyers who receive their codes earlier can redeem them immediately to support preloading, which begins on November 10.

GTA 6 physical copies will contain download codes instead of discs

Players expecting a traditional game disc inside their GTA 6 box will have to adjust their expectations. Rockstar has confirmed that the physical edition will contain a digital download code rather than a disc.

According to the company's official support information, physical copies will become available for shipping and retailer pickup starting November 12. The code can be redeemed as soon as buyers receive it.

The arrangement means customers will still get a physical box, but the actual game will be delivered digitally. There will be no disc to insert into a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S console.

There is also a difference between the physical and digital editions. Rockstar is not offering a physical Ultimate Edition. Customers purchasing the boxed Standard Edition can separately buy the Ultimate Edition upgrade through the PlayStation or Microsoft stores after redeeming their game code.

GTA 6 requires up to 212GB of available storage

The absence of a disc is particularly notable given the amount of storage GTA 6 will require.

Rockstar's pre-load FAQ states that the game will need up to 212GB of available storage, depending on the device. This is the required storage space for preloading, rather than a guaranteed identical download size across every console.

The preloading schedule also gives players an opportunity to prepare before launch. Rockstar has set November 10 as the start date for digital preloading.

PS5 players can begin downloading at midnight local time on November 10, while Xbox Series X|S users can start at 12 a.m. GMT.

Physical buyers can also preload the game, provided they have received and redeemed their codes. They do not necessarily have to wait until November 12, the expected date for physical copies to become available for shipping and retailer pickup.

Rockstar releases nearly 40 new GTA 6 screenshots ahead of launch

The unusual physical release is not the only GTA 6 development attracting attention ahead of November 19. Rockstar has also released a fresh collection of nearly 40 screenshots, giving fans another look at the upcoming game.

Kotaku reported that the latest images include glimpses of characters, locations and chase sequences. The collection offers more visuals for fans to examine as anticipation builds around the release.

The new material gives players another preview of GTA 6 as Rockstar approaches the game's release later this month.
