Regular high-impact exercise like jogging or HIIT can help reduce your biological age and keep you feeling younger.
A new study says exercise can slow down your aging – not just how you look but how your body works inside, as per the Brigham Young University study via Preventive Medicine journal. Sweating during high-impact workouts can make your biological age almost 9 years younger.

Biological age means how old your cells are, not your actual age. The study looked at 5,823 adults aged between 20 to 84 years to understand this. Scientists measured telomeres from blood samples — these are like tiny caps on your DNA that protect it from damage, as stated by the tom’s guide report.

People who exercised hard had younger cells

Longer telomeres = younger cells, while shorter telomeres = aging and disease. People who did high-impact physical activity regularly had longer telomeres than people who hardly moved, according to the reports.

To count as “high activity”:

  • Women had to jog 30 minutes a day
  • Men had to jog 40 minutes a day
  • At least 5 days a week
These active people showed 9 years less cellular aging than inactive ones. Professor Larry Tucker, who led the research, said light workouts don’t help much — you need to exercise at high levels often.

Don’t like running? Try these instead

If you're new to jogging, start by mixing jogging and walking — this method is called Jeffing. You don’t need to run if it’s hard on your knees — other high-intensity workouts work too.

Try HIIT, cycling sprints, spin classes, or using the rowing machine — all help reduce your biological age. The key is to sweat and push your heart rate up with regular effort — it really helps your body stay younger, according to the tom’s guide reports.
