Who is Rau's IAS owner Abhishek Gupta, arrested after three students died in coaching centre's basement?

Delhi police arrested Abhishek Gupta, CEO and owner of Rau's IAS Study Circle, along with coordinator Deshpal Singh, following the deaths of three UPSC aspirants trapped in the flooded basement of the coaching centre during heavy rainfall. They were presented in a magisterial court and placed in 14 days judicial custody.

Who is Abhishek Gupta?

Abhishek Gupta, as per his LinkedIn profile, has led Rau's IAS Study Circle since February 2009. His prior roles include an analyst at Watson Wyatt from 2004 to 2006, a stint at Evalueserve, and work in corporate solutions at Jones Lang LaSalle from 2007 to 2008. Gupta completed his schooling at Modern School in Delhi and graduated from Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies.

Three IAS Aspirants Died in Institute's Basement

On Saturday, the basement of Rau's IAS Study Circle was flooded after heavy rain in Delhi. The Delhi fire department received a distress call around 7 pm about students trapped in the basement. Firefighters found the basement inundated and struggled to pump out water due to continuous rain. After hours of effort, they retrieved the bodies of three students.


The coaching centre had approximately 30 students at the time. Twelve to fourteen were rescued and hospitalized, while others escaped. The incident prompted the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to seal 13 illegally operated basements of coaching centres in Old Rajinder Nagar on Sunday.

Delhi police have arrested five more individuals in connection with the case, as investigations continue into the incident and the operations of coaching centres in the area.
