Nepal erupts in protest after arrest of former PM KP Sharma Oli

Nepal witnessed widespread protests after the arrest of former Prime Minister and CPN-UML chief KP Sharma Oli in connection with the 2025 Gen-Z protest case. Detained from his Bhaktapur residence, Oli faces charges of criminal negligence linked to deaths and large-scale destruction during the protests. Supporters took to the streets in Kathmandu and Lalitpur, burning tyres and copies of the investigation report, calling the arrest politically motivated. The CPN-UML has announced nationwide demonstrations and legal action against the move. The arrest follows recommendations of a high-level commission led by former Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki. The government under Balen Shah has begun implementing the report, intensifying political tensions across the country.
