Karnataka polls: Nomination papers of top leaders, including Shivakumar's, through

The nomination papers of major political leaders including Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar were found valid in the scrutiny done by the election authorities on Friday.

His brother DK Suresh too had filed his nomination papers on Thursday from the same constituency of Kanakapura just to be on the safer side in the event of rejection of Shivakumar's papers on technical grounds. Shivakumar is an aspirant for the CM's post and his followers were concerned that his opponents might sabotage his contest.

None of the major leaders’ nominations has been rejected, in a major relief to all the contesting parties, according to election commission sources.


Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Congress leader Siddaramaiah, and JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy are among the prominent leaders in the poll fray.

Candidates began filing their nominations eight days ago on April 13. According to data from the election office, of the total nominations filed, 707 were from the BJP, 651 from the Congress and 455 from the JD(S). Each candidate had the option to file up to four papers.


There are 3,327 male candidates and 304 female candidates. One candidate has filed under the other gender category, according to the Chief electoral office.


The last day for candidates to withdraw their names is Monday, April 24. Karnataka goes to polls on May 10 in a single phase. The votes will be counted on May 13.
