Details on Karnataka Election
Details on 2023 Karnataka Assembly Election resultsIn line with exit polls results, Karnataka voters handed Congress a thumping win in the 2023 Assembly Elections. Most of the exit polls had predicted a comfortable majority for Congress, while a few had forecast hung assembly and a few others, a BJP win.
The counting of votes for the 224-seat Karnataka Assembly commenced at 8 am on May 13, three days after the voting concluded to elect the new government.
The Congress party crossed the majority mark by early evening and is now set to form a government in Karnataka. This means BJP has lost its lone southern bastion. Congress' morale-boosting show comes ahead of next year's Lok Sabha elections. This election carried a lot of significance as it was being seen as a semi-final of the 2024 general elections.
As soon as the trends became clear, Congress workers across India started jubilating, having gathered at party headquarters in their respective states.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the party's victory in Karnataka is an outcome of "collective work" of party leaders and workers and that the party would work towards consensus to choose its chief ministerial candidate. Kharge said people of all communities voted for the Congress.
The BJP could not make a mark in spite of a spirited effort, outgoing Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai acknowledged.
A good many — over a dozen — of Bommai's Cabinet colleagues lost their seats. They are:
Govind Karjol
JC Madhuswamy
BC Patil
Shankar Patil Munenkoppa
Halappa Achar
B Sriramulu
K Sudhakar
V Somanna
R Ashoka
KC Narayana Gowda
BC Nagesh
Murugesh
Nirani
MTB Nagaraj
One of the most prominent politicians to have lost his seat is Jagadish Shettar, a six-term MLA from Hubbali (Hubli)-Central Dharwad, who had left the BJP and joined Congress pre-election after being denied a ticket.
