Karnataka election results 2023: Kumaraswamy wins Channapatna seat

Channapatna witnessed a direct contest between JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy and BJP's CP Yogeshwar

Janata Dal's H.D. Kumaraswamy won the Channapatna seat by 15,915 votes. The constituency has a significant population of Vokkaliga community voters, who have traditionally supported by the JD(S). The seat is currently held by JD(S) chief and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy.

According to EC website, Kumaraswamy had polled 95892 votes while BJP's Yogeshwara 79,918.

Yogeshwara has been elected five times from the segment since 1999 as an independent, and also from the Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party (SP). He faced defeat in the 2018 polls, with Kumaraswamy entering the fray in Channapatna.


Kumaraswamy had then defeated Yogeshwara by 21,530 votes.

This is likely to be a prestige battle for Kumaraswamy, who has remained unbeaten since 2004. This time, Kumaraswamy is likely to face a stiff competition from BJP leader and former tourism minister CP Yogeshwar. Meanwhile, the Congress has fielded Gangadhar S. from this seat. Yogeshwar enjoys a mass appeal, courtesy of his profession as an actor and director known for delivering hits like 'Uttara Dhruvadim Dakshina Druvaku', Sainika, and Badhri.

Ahead of the counting of results, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday said that he has not been contacted as yet for the formation of the government in case of a cliffhanger, adding that he is hoping for a good show.

"No one has contacted me till now. Let us see the final results first" the JD(S) leader added.

Voting for Karnataka assembly elections 2023 were held on May 10. The fiercely contested election that saw high-pitched campaigns from the political parties. The Congress on the other hand worked hard to wrest power from the BJP that is striving to break the 38-year-old pattern of alternating governments and retain its power in the state.

Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, held various roadshows, rallies and elections campaigns. An incumbent government has not returned to power in Karnataka after a full term of five years since 1985.
