The elections for all 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi were held on February 5 and the counting has begun at 8 am on Saturday. Shakur Basti, one of the 10 assembly segments of Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha seat, is a key constituency.

BJP candidate Karnail Singh leads by over 19,000 votes against seasoned AAP leader Satyendar Jain after 10 rounds of counting, according to EC trends.

Jain was a former minister in the Delhi cabinet. His portfolios included Health and Family Welfare, Industries, Home, Power, Water, Urban Development and Irrigation & Flood Control. He served three terms as the Delhi Health Minister.



In his first tenure he served as Health & Family welfare, Gurudwara Elections and Industries Minister from 28 December 2013 to 14 February 2014 and, In his Second tenure he served as Health & Family Welfare, Industries, Home, PWD, Power, Water, Transport, Urban Development and Irrigation & Flood Control from 14 February to 13 February 2020 in the previous AAP Governments.

He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in May 2022 and has been his custody since on allegations of money laundering, 9 months after which he submitted his resignation for the portfolios he held as a minister. He has spent more than 2 years in jail.


Shakur Basti results in 2020 and 2015

Jain is targeting a hattrick of wins after having won in 2020 with 51,165 votes, defeating BJP candidate S.C. Vats, who received 43,573 votes. The Congress candidate, Dev Raj Arora, obtained 3,382 votes.

In the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, Jain secured a close victory with 51,530 votes. BJP's S.C. Vats garnered 48,397 votes, while Congress candidate Chaman Lal Sharma received 4,812 votes.

Shakur Basti voter demography

The area is a mix of residential and commercial spaces and is home to the Shakur Basti railway station. The seat has incubent AAP MLA Satyendar Jain take on BJP's Karnail Singh. Congress has fielded Satish Luthra.

According to the data from Election Commission of India, there were 99,245 voters in the Shakur Basti constituency during the 2020 Delhi Assembly Elections. Out of this, 51,954 voters were male and 46,892 were female.

In 2015, the total number of voters in the Shakur Basti constituency was 1,05,899. Out of this, 55,445 voters were male and 49,632 were female.


Delhi election 2025

In previous elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured consecutive landslide victories, winning 67 out of 70 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) improved marginally in 2020, winning eight seats, while the Congress failed to secure any. This year, all three parties are in a fierce electoral battle, promising voters a range of welfare schemes and policy initiatives.

A total of 699 candidates, including 603 men, 95 women, and one third-gender person contested the election. A total of 1.5 crore voters had registered, out of which about 60 per cent voted on February 5.
