Meet BJP's giant slayer Parvesh Verma, who defeated Arvind Kejriwal from his bastion New Delhi

Parvesh Verma, contesting from the New Delhi constituency in a direct battle against AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, is currently leading by 3,00 votes after 11 rounds of counting, according to EC trends. Kejriwal, the former Delhi chief minister, was contesting from the Central Delhi seat he has held since 2013. In 2013, Kejriwal made history by defeating then-Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Sheila Dikshit. In the 2020 elections, he secured the seat with a margin of 21,697 votes against BJP’s Sunil Kumar Yadav.

Upon winning, Verma said, "I congratulate the people of Delhi. They showed trust in PM." When asked if he was the chief minister face, he said, "“I will talk about it later.”

Who is Parvesh Verma?

Verma is a two-time Member of parliament (MP) from West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 for the first time and re-elected in 2019 with the highest-ever margin of victory in the history of Delhi, a margin of 5,78,486 votes.

He is a member of two high-level committees of Parliament, the Finance Committee, and the Estimates Committee.

Verma also served on the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament and was a member of the Standing Committee on Urban Development in his first term as an MP. He contested the Mehrauli Vidhan Sabha constituency in the 2013 assembly election and defeated MP Yoganand Shastri, speaker of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. Verma is the son of Sahib Singh Verma, former Chief Minister of Delhi.

The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections have turned into a two-way battle among with BJP leading 41 seats and AAP leading in 29, in the high-stakes electoral contest for Delhi's 70 assembly seats, as per early trends reported by the Election Commission of India.


While AAP and Congress fielded 70 candidates each, BJP contested 68, leaving two to its two allies, Janata Dal (United) and Loktantrik Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). But there were 699 candidates in total - 603 men, 95 women and a third-gender contestant. Over 60.5% of voters, or 9,451,997 of 15,614,000 electors, visited the polling stations on February 5.
