Nitish Kumar set to be Bihar CM for record 10th time, NDA elects him leader of legislature party

Nitish Kumar is set to form the government for record tenth time in Bihar as the National Democratic Alliance on Wednesday named him the leader of the NDA legislature party.

The JD(U) supremo will be taking oath as the Chief Minister on Thursday alongside BJP's Samrat Choudhary as his deputy. Meanwhile, other ministerial posts have not yet been disclosed.

The NDA partners, BJP, JD(U), LJP(RV), HAM, and RLM, collectively crossed the majority mark by a wide margin securing a landslide victory with 202 seats in the 243-member House, where Nitish's party won 85 constituencies, while the saffron party emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats.


Earlier in the day, JD(U) had also declared Kumar to lead the legislative party.

As for the Mahagathbandhan, the alliance of the opposition parties, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won 25 seats, the Indian National Congress six, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) [CPI(ML)(L)] two, the Indian Inclusive Party (IIP) one, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] one seat.

All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) secured five seats, while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won one seat.

The Bihar assembly elections were held in two phases on November 6 and 11. Bihar recorded a historic 67.13 per cent voter turnout, the highest since 1951, with women voters outpacing men (71.6% vs 62.8%).
