New Delhi: As Congress leader Rahul Gandhi embarks on a 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar, the ruling NDA attacked him for defaming the constitutional authorities and misleading the country on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

BJP general secretary Tarun Chug accused Gandhi of running a campaign to defame the country's democracy at the behest of foreign powers.

"Rahul Gandhi has no matter to raise, which is why he is running a campaign to defame the country's democracy, constitution, and institutions by creating an atmosphere of lies and fear to please his foreign masters. He (Rahul Gandhi) has no facts, he has no evidence when the Election Commission asks for evidence," Chug told ET.

Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal told ET: "The yatra of Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav has already been punctured. The Supreme Court itself is monitoring the SIR exercise. The people of India do not stand with those who do not trust the Supreme Court. The people of Bihar have faith that the Election Commission will deliver justice to them."

JDU working president Sanjay Jha told ET that SIR is a non-issue in Bihar. "SIR is a non-issue among the people of Bihar. Have you seen any protests or complaints from the people? We have taken feedback from our party workers across the state and there is absolutely no problem at all. When there is no issue to the people, for whom is Rahul Gandhi doing the yatra. When EC asks for proof, he (Rahul Gandhi) doesn't provide. This is election time, and everyone tries to do something to attract voters. For the Opposition, nothing seems to be working in Bihar," Jha told media persons in Patna.

NDA ally LJP (RV) leader Arun Bharti reminded the Opposition of the earlier Congress rule.

"Congress, from 1962 to the 1990s, stole the votes of Dalits and the backward communities, prevented them from voting, and snatched the ballot through the power of the bullet... Today, these two thieves (Congress and RJD), who are like cousins, have come together to organise a Voter Adhikar Yatra," Bharti told ET.
