New Delhi: Congress on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court directive on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, including admission of Aadhar cards for verification.

At the same time, the party sought to sidestep the apex court's critical observation that political parties were not active in assisting voters in verification and filing objections.

"The Indian National Congress welcomes today's verdict of the Supreme Court on the Bihar SIR issue. Democracy has survived a brutal assault from the Election Commission of India," said Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh.

Without commenting on the apex court expressing surprise over political parties not going all out to assist voters with their verification, Ramesh said, "The Supreme Court has laid down guardrails to make the revision more inclusive by including political parties in the process. So far the ECI's approach has been obstructionist and contrary to the interests of the voters."
