Trends from the Bihar Assembly elections show a strong lead for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), while Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party has failed to make a mark. The Mahagathbandhan (MGB) trails behind, with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) performing better than its alliance partners but still far from matching the NDA’s pace.

According to the latest trends on the Election Commission website, the NDA leads in 187 assembly seats, while the opposition INDIA bloc is ahead in just 49. Within the NDA, Janata Dal (United) is leading in 85 seats, BJP in 76, LJP (RV) in 22, and HAM(S) in 5. The Mahagathbandhan’s early leads include RJD with 35 seats, Congress 6, CPI(ML)-Liberation 7, VIP(I) 1, CPI(M) 1, BSP 1, AIMIM 2, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha 1.

NDA dominates

The initial trends highlight the NDA’s clear advantage. Both the BJP and JD(U) are performing strongly across the state, while the MGB has not been able to catch up. RJD remains the strongest single party within the opposition, but its reach is limited compared to the NDA’s broad performance.

Jan Suraaj, contesting its first Bihar Assembly elections with over 200 candidates, is absent from the early seat charts. Where vote share is visible, it remains marginal and does not affect the margins in competitive constituencies.

Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party Struggling

Prashant Kishor had set an ambitious target for his party and said any failure would be a personal defeat. All exit polls, however, predicted poor performance for Jan Suraaj, with no pollster giving the party more than five seats. Kishor himself did not contest, but the vote share will indicate whether the party influenced either the NDA or Mahagathbandhan vote base.

Jan Suraaj spokesperson on early results

Jan Suraaj Party spokesperson Pavan K Varma said on Friday the party would conduct a “serious review” of its performance. Speaking to PTI Video, he said:

"We worked with full sincerity, with the belief that Bihar needs fundamental change. There was no lack of effort. But if we have not won the people's trust, we will analyse why and reflect on it."

Varma added that while the party faltered at the ballot box, it succeeded in highlighting key issues such as employment, migration, education, and corruption.

"One thing gives us satisfaction that the Jan Suraaj agenda of employment, migration, education and corruption-free Bihar will now be part of every party's agenda," he said.

On NDA’s surge and future plans

On the NDA’s strong showing, Varma said: "I have seen many elections where results turn out differently from what was anticipated. There is no doubt Nitish ji continues to enjoy acceptance and respect in Bihar. I have worked closely with him, and we are happy that he has received the people's mandate. We wish him well and hope he becomes the chief minister again."

Regarding introspection, he said Jan Suraaj would “review its shortcomings” despite maintaining that its vision and efforts were not flawed.

"The results are disappointing, no doubt. We will now analyse what needs to be done next," he added.

On speculation about Prashant Kishor leaving Bihar, Varma said: "Whether he stays or goes is his personal decision. But he cannot leave Bihar, nor can Bihar leave him. Once the complete results are out, he will share his response on the future course."
