Zombie virus resurfaces in Siberia after 50K years. ‘Go Goa Gone’ & ‘The Simpsons’ memes land on Twitter
European researchers revive as many as 13 viruses that are over 50,000 years old.

Fast forward to 2022, while the apprehensions related to the Covid-19 pandemic have almost subsided, there is something new that has triggered panic and mirth worldwide.
Scientists have reportedly revived a 48,500-year-old ‘Zombie Virus’ that has been buried in ice. Climate change has thawed ancient permafrost and this may likely pose a number of threats to humans according to researchers.
About two dozen viruses have been revived by researchers and among these is a virus that has been frozen under a lake for over 48,000 years. The ancient samples were collected from the Siberia region of Russia. As many as 13 new pathogens have been categorised as ‘Zombie viruses. Shockingly, the viruses have been infectious despite being trapped for thousands of years.
While the new development may come as shocking, the Internet can come up with some of the most amusing reactions.

The researchers said that that the biological risk of reviving the viruses were negligible as they had only targetted those strains that could infect amoeba microbes. However, they warned that the revival of a virus that could infect humans or animals could prove to be dangerous.
