When Anand Mahindra's 'calibrated unlock' suggestion turned into a joke

Mahindra said the 'calibrated relaxation of lockdown restrictions' don't apply to pools.

Anand Mahindra clarified what he didn't mean by "calibrated relaxation of lockdown restrictions".
Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, on Friday, shared a graph by American think-tank Pew Research Center, showing how the 2020 pandemic affected the financial state of every Indian.

The Pew analysis showed that Indian middle class reduced by 32 million in 2020 due to the downturn, which accounted for 60 per cent of the global retreat in the number of people in the middle-income tier that is defined by people with incomes of $10.01-$20 a day (approximately Rs 724 to 1447). Meanwhile, the number of poor Indians that earn $2 or less a day (less than Rs 145 approximately) increased by 75 million because of the global recession.

Calling it the harsh reality of lives versus livelihoods, the 66-year-old business tycoon said that lives will be ruined if economic activities continue to be frozen even if the lockdown had saved people's lives. "Those areas/regions which have shown a strong decline in new cases should look into a calibrated, selective unlocking," he suggested.

The very next day, the businessman came across an image that tickled his funny bone. An instruction outside a swimming pool read, "When pool re-opens, due to social distancing rules, there will be no water in lanes 1, 3 and 5."

Mahindra immediately clarified that this wasn't what he meant by "calibrated relaxation of lockdown restrictions".

The post was liked over 2,900 times and retweeted 157 times. The sense of humour boded well with his 8.4 million followers. While some suggested filling the pool with sanitiser, other guessed if it was a 'partitioned pool'.
