Top market trend: Bottle cap challenge

Never mind the ‘$5 trillion economy by 2024’ challenge. Try this for kicks.

With climbing to the top of Mount Everest as blasé as a trip to Manali these days, challenges testing human physical prowess have moved on. If it was the ice-bucket challenge — with celebrities and nobodies alike dunking themselves with a bucket of ice — that went viral in 2014, then this summer, it’s the bottle cap challenge (BCC). Not to be confused with the 2016 trend of bottle-flipping — throwing a plastic bottle partially filled with water to see if it can land on its base — BCC has its origin with Kazakh taekwondo instructor Farabi Davletchin knocking off the cap of a bottle with one smooth kick without kicking the bottle on an Instagram video. His challenge was taken up by mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters and enthusiasts like designer Errolson Hugh, actor Jason Statham and musician John Mayer.

This week we had Govinda — yes, Hero No. 1— join the fray. We also had rather unorthodox versions of the BCC being carried out, such as warbler-of-impossibly-high notes Mariah Carey apparently singing in a crazy octave and popping the cap open poltergeist champagne-style.

Akshay Kumar, Sushmita Sen and others with enthusiasm, flexibility and an Instagram account have also done their bit for cap and country. But the most radical take came from comedian Sunil Grover — who took off the cap with his bare hands. Amazing.
