Madhavan recalled that the publicity department specifically asked him not to discuss his marriage during the film’s promotional events. They reportedly feared that revealing he had married six months earlier could hurt the film at the box office.



The advice did not sit well with Madhavan. Instead of agreeing to hide an important part of his personal life, he decided to discuss the matter with Mani Ratnam, the director who had given him the opportunity to lead the film.

Madhavan told the filmmaker that he was being asked to lie about his marriage. According to him, "So I went to Mani sir and said, ‘They are asking me to lie.’ He said, ‘Do whatever you want.’ I think it was an insult to him that just because the hero is married, a Mani Ratnam film will flop. That is not the right picture."

The actor also felt that the idea of a Mani Ratnam film failing simply because its lead actor was married was unfair to the filmmaker. Madhavan believed that his marital status should not determine whether audiences would accept him in a romantic role.

I am really sorry if I don’t become a romantic hero. That is fine. But I want to say that I am willing to take that risk rather than disrespect my wife."
