For many people trying to lose stubborn belly fat, green tea has become the go-to wellness drink. While it may offer antioxidants and modest metabolic benefits, experts believe abdominal fat is influenced by several underlying factors, including insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, poor digestion and impaired fat metabolism. Simply depending on one beverage is unlikely to deliver lasting results unless these root causes are addressed through a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Highlighting this holistic approach, Delhi-based nutritionist Lovneet Batra recently shared 7 everyday Indian foods on Instagram that may support metabolism and tackle the underlying drivers of stubborn abdominal fat.

Cumin (Jeera)

Cumin has long been valued in Indian kitchens for its digestive and metabolic benefits. Studies suggest its bioactive compounds may support fat metabolism and improve metabolic health. Lovneet Batra recommends soaking one tablespoon of cumin overnight and drinking the water on an empty stomach. Alternatively, the seeds can be boiled for five minutes to prepare a warm morning drink.

Fenugreek seeds (Methi dana)

Fenugreek seeds are rich in soluble fibre, which may help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. Better blood sugar control is closely linked with reduced abdominal fat accumulation. Batra advises soaking one teaspoon overnight, drinking the water and chewing the softened seeds in the morning. Sprouted fenugreek can also be added to salads.

Carom seeds (Ajwain)

Ajwain is traditionally consumed to support digestion and ease bloating. Its natural compounds may reduce digestive discomfort and help relieve temporary water retention, making the abdomen feel less bloated. Batra recommends chewing half a teaspoon after meals or preparing a warm ajwain tea by boiling the seeds in water.

Cinnamon (Dalchini)

Research suggests cinnamon may help improve insulin sensitivity while supporting healthy blood sugar regulation. It may also help moderate stress-related hormonal fluctuations when included as part of an overall healthy diet. Batra recommends adding half a teaspoon to warm water, replacing sugar with cinnamon in tea or sprinkling it over porridge.

Turmeric (Haldi)

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties. Since chronic inflammation has been associated with visceral fat accumulation, turmeric may offer supportive benefits. Batra suggests consuming fresh turmeric with warm water every morning and pairing it with black pepper and a healthy fat such as ghee to significantly enhance curcumin absorption.

Fennel seeds (Saunf)

Fennel seeds are commonly chewed after meals to aid digestion. They may also help support hormonal balance and reduce digestive discomfort. Batra recommends chewing one teaspoon after meals or sipping fennel-infused water throughout the day for sustained digestive support.

Triphala

A traditional Ayurvedic formulation, Triphala is widely used to support digestive and liver health. Since the liver plays an essential role in fat metabolism, maintaining its function may indirectly benefit metabolic health. Batra advises beginning with half a teaspoon of Triphala powder in warm water before bedtime and increasing the quantity gradually if well tolerated.

In conclusion, Lovneet Batra emphasizes that sustainable belly fat management requires looking beyond a single superfood or beverage. Instead of depending solely on green tea, she encourages addressing the metabolic factors that contribute to abdominal fat through nutrient-rich Indian foods, consistent physical activity, quality sleep, stress management and an overall balanced lifestyle for long-term health benefits.
